Energy shortage places another major project at risk

14 September 2023

Tasmania’s energy crisis under Premier Jeremy Rockliff has placed another major project, and the 200 jobs it will create, at risk.

HIF’s billion dollar efuels plant will create 200 ongoing jobs, but it needs 400 MW of new wind energy to get off the ground, and it needs it soon.

When asked today in parliament where he would pluck the energy from - the Premier had no answers.

After 10 years of Liberal energy policy failures, a lack of power is one of the major factors contributing to the state’s economy running flat.

Just this year we’ve heard from businesses like Norske Skog aren’t able to proceed with their decarbonisation and job-creating projects because of a lack of power.

We’ve seen hydrogen proponents give up on Tasmania, because of a lack of power, and we’ve seen the business community cry out that we’re in an energy crisis, because of a lack of power.

Earlier this week, the Premier said “without energy, our economy does not grow.  If our economy does not grow, we lose jobs.”

After 10 years of a Liberal Government, that’s exactly what’s happening.
