Health Minister Guy Barnett must ensure a solution is found at today’s East Devonport Medical Centre roundtable.
This general practice is critical to the people in East Devonport and more than 6000 people have relied on its services over the past 50 years.
The community is adamant they do not want this clinic to close.
It is not straightforward for many East Devonport residents to cross the river to receive health care, especially with public transport in the area being poor.
The closure of this clinic will see health outcomes worsen and an over reliance on the Mersey Community Hospital, which is already under immense pressure from more people presenting at the emergency department.
Minister Barnett needs to stop saying this is just a Federal Government issue, when he knows full well it isn’t.
The Rockliff Government needs to work constructively with the Federal Government, with local government, other healthcare providers and with the East Devonport community to ensure the medical centre remains open.
The community can show its support by signing Labor’s petition to save the East Devonport Medical Centre and by attending this Sunday’s rally at Pioneer Park, East Devonport, at 11.30am.
