Information Technology Minister Madeleine Ogilvie promised regular updates on the cyber security hack yet has once again gone to ground and not said anything for a week.
We know how secretive this government is.
Minister Ogilvie spent the first week of this incredibly serious breach of the government’s cyber security covering it up, leaving Tasmanians completely unaware that their personal information may be at risk.
The opposition parties and the media were then sent an extraordinary letter from the head of DPAC trying to gag people from talking on it.
We’re hearing from people impacted that they feel like they’re being kept in the dark.
We were promised regular updates but nothing has been said since Friday last week.
If there have been no further breaches or release of data the government should tell us.
It’s also emerged today that Optus customers are taking a class action against Optus for its cyber breach.
The suit, filed by class action law firm Slater and Gordon and representing 100,000 people, accuses Optus of breaching privacy, telecommunication and consumer laws as well as the company’s internal policies.
It would be interesting to know from Minister Ogilvie if the Tasmanian government is exposed to similar legal action as a result of it having the worst cyber security preparedness in the country.
The government has had ten years to fix our cyber security preparedness and if they haven’t fixed it by now they never will.
