Why we need it
Its vital that we take action on truth-telling and continue the path to reconciliation.
Disappointingly, after 10 years of the Liberals, the Aboriginal community have not been listened to and have had no certainty from government policy.
“Labor will elevate truth telling on our path to reconciliation”
The Liberals have made countless promises to the Aboriginal community and have not followed through again and again.
A Labor Government will work hand-in-hand with the community and prioritise community-led truth telling.
The details
A Labor Government will establish a Truth Telling and Treaty Commission led by Aboriginal people, to take practical and tangible steps towards a treaty between the Government and Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
Labor believes that truth telling is vital to understanding who the Government can make a treaty with, and that an Aboriginal-led Commission will pave the way for a better relationship between Aboriginal and other Tasmanians.
The Commission will share space with the Elders’ Council of Tasmania and will be funded over three years to undertake its work.
