Key Points
A Rebecca White Labor Government will grow Tasmania’s screen industry with sustainable and meaningful support.
We’ll improve things after 10 years of Liberal government have left the screen industry critically underfunded and in a culture of survival which stifles innovation, creativity and growth.
As part of our Plan, Labor will give $500,000 extra funding each year for Screen Tasmania.
We will commit $100,000 for a Screen Conference,
- Provide more ongoing funding for Screen Tasmania
- Support a Screen Conference
- Work towards a post-production facility in Tasmania
Develop a program for location incentives
Why we need it
After a decade of Liberal Government, screen industry funding has not kept pace with CPI or changing employment, superannuation and work health and safety laws. As a result, the sector is now critically underfunded.
“Labor will grow our screen industry with sustainable and meaningful support”
Inadequate multi-year funding opportunities have led to increased inefficiency in the sector, and Tasmania has been increasingly held back by a lack of resources like a post-production facility or location incentives.
As a result, the screen industry exists in a culture of survival which stifles innovation, creativity and growth.
The details
Under our Plan for Tasmania’s screen industry, Labor will:
- Increase Screen Tasmania’s funding
A Labor Government will increase Screen Tasmania’s funding with an extra $500,000 a year, every year, to support Screen Tasmania to undertake more projects and provide more support to the industry.
- Support a Screen Conference
Labor in Government will provide $50,000 for a Screen Conference to be held in Tasmania to support our screen industry. This addresses a long-standing industry need.
- Work towards a post-production facility
A Rebecca White Labor Government will fund $50,000 for a feasibility study into a post-production facility for Tasmania. This facility will create more jobs in the industry and will help students at TAFE and the University develop their practical skills.
- Develop location incentives
Labor in Government will work with the screen industry to develop a program of location incentives to encourage more screen projects to come to Tasmania.
We know that the current limited and ad hoc funding for location incentives is driving projects away from Tasmania, and we appreciate the industry’s need for sustainable location incentives.
- Support skills development
Labor knows how hard hit the industry has been by the closure of Wide Angle, and we will work with the industry to re-establish a skills development organisation in Tasmania.
