Jeremy Rockliff’s announcement of extended drought relief for Tasmania’s farmers is welcome but the announcement four days before an election is a cynical exploitation of the hardship they’ve been experiencing for weeks.
As we did with the Bass Strait Islands, Labor completely supports drought relief funding, but waiting until an election campaign to announce it is cruel and shameful.
Mr Rockliff’s announcement at this stage of the campaign also shows yet another flagrant disregard for caretaker conventions.
After 10 years of the Liberals, Tasmanians deserve better than a government that is happy to politicise Tasmanians’ pain and suffering to try to cling to government instead of providing help when and where it is needed.
