A Tasmanian Labor Government will put Tasmanians at the heart of our state’s future, to ensure that Tasmanians benefit from our abundant renewable energy resources.
Labor’s energy policy will allow our state to seize the opportunities before us, underpin a new era of industry and manufacturing in Tasmania, give Tasmanians a Tasmanian price for Tasmanian power, start building a society where everyone can afford the basics and create an economy with well-paying jobs and competitive businesses.
After 10 years of Liberal government, Tasmanians are paying mainland prices for their power, small businesses are suffering, medium sized businesses are suffering, and major industrials have no certainty about their future energy supply.
It’s clear that this cannot continue or we will miss out on the opportunities that can take us forward, jobs will suffer, business will continue to suffer, Tasmanians will continue to suffer and our economy will continue to go backwards.
Our policy speaks to a diverse range of stakeholders, from the community sector, to unions, to small business and major industrials.
Tasmanians built the Hydro, we own the Hydro and a Labor Government will make sure that Tasmanians and Tasmanian businesses are the ones to benefit from our Hydro.
In the first 100 days of a Labor Government, we will reshape Hydro Tasmania through a new Ministerial Charter that focuses on growing our economy, creating jobs here and delivering the lowest prices in the nation.
We will also:
- Wind back power price increases, saving families hundreds of dollars a year,
- Keep prices low by capping increases at 2.5 per cent a year
- Exit the Marinus project to ensure it can still happen, but Tasmanians won’t pay for it
- Invest the money saved by exiting Marinus in energy generation assets
- Double our power supply
- Create an energy reserve to major industrials to keep manufacturing
- Provide supply agreements until at least 2040
- Implement a rebate scheme for contracted customers
The Liberals have had 10 years to help Tasmanians but instead households, business operators and the economy are paying for their incompetence.
A Labor Government will set Tasmania up for the future and deliver a Tasmanian price for Tasmanian power.
