A Rebecca White Labor Government will deliver on expanding the Burnie Port, unlocking opportunities to grow the state’s exports and strengthen the economy.
A Labor Government will work collaboratively with TasPorts to see this come to fruition, creating new jobs and securing future economic development.
The Port of Burnie is Tasmania’s largest deep-water port and is critical to Tasmania’s economic growth. It supports key industries and markets including mining, forestry, container freight fuel and tourism.
It is also an important regional employer with many direct and indirect jobs created through its logistics networks and key industries.
This project is vitally important to support the growth of container cargo and support a number of future renewable energy projects that will need to use the port as a logistics hub.
Labor believes it is TasPorts’ core business to invest in statewide port facilties and we will be making sure this happens with a clear Ministerial direction that TasPorts should leverage their balance sheet to complete the upgrade.
The site is heavily constrained and in dire need of investment.
Under a Labor Government, TasPorts will dredge, extend and strengthen Berth 7 to cater for woodchip and mineral production.
The cruise ship market has provided a great economic stimulus to the North-West economy and a Labor Government would work with industry and TasPorts to develop a timeline for building a Berth 8 in deeper water within the harbour to cater to cruise ships and other bulk products.
A Labor Government will also ensure an independent review of TasPorts culture and commercial practice is undertaken to make sure that TasPorts is working in the best interest of the state to deliver a better future.
The Liberals have promised to expand the Burnie Port since 2018. The project has been Infrastructure Australia’s Priority list since 2021. Why hasn’t this progressed?
If the Liberals haven’t delivered this project by now, they never will.
Only a Labor Government will deliver on this significant project to unlock Tasmania’s full potential and provide Tasmanians with a better future.
