Key Points
To take urgent action on the cost-of-living and provide relief for young people and renters, Rebecca White and Labor will scrap charges for connecting and disconnecting basic meters on people who move house.
We will do this by scrapping the $100.97 charge to connect a basic meter, and the $64.09 charge for a final meter read.
Tasmanians are facing a cost of living crisis, and the Liberals say they won’t do anything about it.
By contrast, Labor’s plan will:
- Save $165 for Tasmanians moving house
- Help the large number of customers who still have basic meters
- Deliver immediate cost of living relief
Why we need it
Tasmania is in the middle of a cost of living crisis, and the cost of renting is soaring as people are struggling to make ends meet.
On average, renters move every 1.8 years, and 52% of Australian households led by someone aged 15-24 have moved in the past 12 months.
“Tasmanians shouldn’t be slugged with extra charges when moving house”
Moving house is an expensive and stressful time, especially when it’s not by choice. Labor will remove these extra charges which add up to $165 for every Tasmanian moving house.
By contrast, the Liberals have done nothing on this issue after 10 years in Government.
These charges will be scrapped and the costs paid in-house by the retailer.
