A bridge too far: budget disaster leads to infrastructure cuts

30 September 2024

Labor stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs. And that’s why we’re so concerned about the cuts to vital infrastructure projects occurring as a result of the Liberals’ budget mismanagement.

Several key bridge projects, including the new Tamar Bridge in the north, the duplication of Launceston's Charles Street Bridge, and the Tasman Bridge upgrades in the south, have been scaled back, delayed indefinitely or completely shelved.

These are projects the Liberals have been promising for years. They were designed to improve traffic, grow the economy and create jobs for Tasmanians.

But once again, we are seeing the consequences of the Liberals’ reckless handling of Tasmania’s finances, with impacts not just to the state budget but also the delivery of key projects.

Infrastructure spending overall is set to decline by 30 per cent, or $316 million, by 2027. These cuts to Tasmania’s infrastructure pipeline will damage the future of the construction sector, at a time when Tasmania can least afford it. Five thousand jobs have been lost since Jeremy Rockliff started governing in minority and Tasmania has crashed down the nation economic leaderboard.

Nothing is getting built under this minority Liberal government - with their cuts to three major bridge projects just the latest example.
