Minister Abetz MIA in Metro dispute

31 October 2024

Labor stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs, and that means standing with Tasmanian bus drivers fighting for better working conditions.

Minister Abetz is nowhere to be seen on this issue, and his disappearing act is a complete failure of leadership. As Transport Minister, Eric Abetz has completely abandoned his own workers.

Tasmanian bus drivers have been subjected to dangerous attacks and abuse on numerous occasions, yet safety screens and Transit Officers have still not been implemented on Tasmanian buses. Some services still aren’t running, electric buses are still broken, and hydrogen buses are sitting at the depot with nowhere to refuel giving Tasmania a glimpse of the Spirits fiasco all over again.

Tasmanian bus drivers are at breaking point. Workers took industrial action last week and have threatened more unless Minister Abetz steps in.

Labor will always stand with workers fighting for better conditions, will the Minister back his workers in too?

Meg Brown MP
Shadow Minister for Transport
