Rockliff refuses to rule out Metro privatisation

28 November 2024

The Liberal minority government is set for a fire sale of state-owned assets to prop up its busted budget.

Responding to a question about the Liberals’ plan to assess public ownership of Tasmanian GBEs, Premier Rockliff refused to rule out selling Metro Tasmania.

Metro has already been forced to cut hundreds of services and will no doubt slash even more if put into private hands.

Public transport is meant to be an essential public service, yet under the Liberals Metro has been driven into the ground and drivers are at breaking point. In the middle of industrial negotiations, Metro workers deserve better than a Premier prepared to sell them out.

Labor stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs, and we’ll continue to back Metro workers in their fight for better working conditions as negotiations and industrial action continues across the state.

We know that after 10 years the Liberals have mismanaged Tasmania’s finances, but we don’t know what they are going to sell to prop up their busted budget.

Premier Rockliff and the Liberals need to be up front about their privatisation plans.

Meg Brown MP
Shadow Minister for Transport
