Under my leadership, Labor will make Tasmania the easiest place in Australia to do business. Few industries battle more red tape than our hospitality industry and they need a break.
Part of Labor’s plan to get Tasmania back on track is by making Tasmania the best place to grow up, work and retire. A great hospitality sector encourages young people to stay and come to our state.
Tasmania’s nighttime economy has untapped potential – we need to make sure our cities are fun, safe, and open for business around the clock. That’s why I am proud to announce Labor’s will deliver a comprehensive Night Time Economy Strategy.
The hospitality sector has been knocked around by Liberal Government broken promises and red tape that have held the industry back for way too long.
A thriving, modern economy can’t afford to shut down at 5pm. Some of our most creative entrepreneurs, most passionate workers, and most exciting businesses operate while the rest of us are sleeping.
Central to our strategy will be:
- Reducing red tape by working with city councils to cut unnecessary permits and costs for late-night venues, outdoor dining, and festivals struggling to find sustainable business models.
- Creating 24-hour economy zones to streamline land use approvals and tailor trading regulations to encourage business growth and activity after hours.
- Supporting live music and arts venues by offering liquor licence fee rebates for venues that promote live entertainment.
- Introducing protections for existing venues, so they can operate freely.
- Focusing on nighttime workers – Labor’s strategy will prioritise the safety, security, and well-being of workers that our nighttime economy relies on such as cleaners, hospitality staff, security guards, transport workers and emergency services.
Our cities have unique advantages, and we need to make sure locals and visitors can experience all we have to offer – day or night.
We’ve seen other places in Australia, like the Minns Government in NSW, and cities around the world, adopt 24/7 economy strategies – I won’t let Tasmania fall behind.
My vision is for an exciting Tasmania where businesses thrive, workers are supported, and Tasmania becomes the easiest place to do business so that we can build a reputation for being the best place to grow up, work and retire.
