Key Points
Rebecca White and Labor are taking urgent action on the cost of living. We will cut the last two years of power price increases and then cap future power price rises for every Tasmanian household and small business.
We will act urgently on this by passing the necessary legislation within the first 100 days of a Labor Government.
Tasmanians have invested in the Hydro for 100 years. We should be paying Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power.
Labor’s plan will:
- Reverse two years of massive power price increases, saving $400 for the average household each year from 1 July.
- Provide cost of living relief for every Tasmanian household
- Support small businesses with the cost of doing business
- Put an end to Jeremy Rockliff’s unfair power price rises
Why we need it
Labor knows hardworking Tasmanians are doing it really tough with the soaring cost of living, and struggling to pay these huge power bills.
Tasmanians own the Hydro. We’ve invested in it for 100 years. We should be the ones who benefit by paying Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power.
Instead, Tasmanians are stuck paying high mainland prices because Jeremy Rockliff and the Liberals have voted against a cap on power prices three times.
Tasmanians simply can’t afford any more of Jeremy Rockliff’s unfair power price rises.
The details
A Labor Government will pass legislation to cap power price rises at 2.5% for the next three years, and return the past two years of power price rises back directly to households
It is simple legislation and it has been done before, including as recently as 2018.
We do not need to break away from the National Electricity Market to ensure Tasmanians pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power – we just need to cap power prices like we did in 2018.
Both sides of politics used to support this idea. The Liberals went to the last election promising to cap prices – and the promise is still on their website.
But Jeremy Rockliff and the Liberals have broken their promise, and the average Tasmanian household is now paying $500 more for power.
They’ve even voted to block Labor’s plan three times.
Only Labor can be trusted to ensure Tasmanians pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power.
