Greg Luckman
Senate Candidate

Greg grew up on a farm on the Eastern Shore, where he learned the value of hard work, resilience and community. He attended local public schools - Howrah Primary, Clarence High, and Rosny College before studying Agricultural Science at the University of Tasmania where he completed a Master’s degree and a PhD. For over twenty years, Greg worked as a research scientist at UTAS, developing new crops for Tasmania. His deep connection to the land and rural communities shaped his understanding of the challenges faced by farming families and sparked a lifelong commitment to helping people build secure, healthy lives.
Greg’s passion for social justice was forged through his decade of service on the board of Amnesty International Australia. Meeting prisoners of conscience, people imprisoned or tortured for their belief, left a deep mark on him. He came to believe that when others’ rights are under threat, it is the responsibility of those with safety and freedom to speak out. This belief in solidarity and fairness naturally led him to the Labor Party, whose mission to build a fairer society aligned with his own. Greg believes that if you want to live in a better society, you must be part of creating it.
Greg sees access to healthcare as one of the most urgent and fundamental responsibilities of government. Without good health, so many other aspects of life like education, work and family can fall apart. After retiring from a distinguished career that took him from research into health administration, including roles with the Pharmacy Board and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Greg is now stepping up to serve his community again. With deep roots in Tasmania’s rural communities and a career devoted to science, health, and fairness, Greg is ready to stand to create a better future for Tasmanians.
