$228 million education cuts to hurt Tasmanian children and schools

$228 million education cuts to hurt Tasmanian children and schools

Minister for Education Jo Palmer has failed to guarantee schools, teachers, students and families won’t be left worse off by the 150 jobs the Minister is ripping from the department to help reach Eric Abetz’ $228 million education cuts target.

That’s because she can’t.

As someone who has taught in public schools, I know that you can’t teach kids in classrooms without proper support.

Teachers rely on the people around them - support staff, learning support, wellbeing staff, admin staff, policy workers and specialist services - to help students learn and keep schools running.

150 jobs is a lot of jobs. It’s impossible to cut that many people from the Education Department without affecting schools, students, teachers and families.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, Premier Rockliff has put Eric Abetz in charge of cutting jobs and services to pay for it and Tasmanians will suffer because of it.
