$7.2 million down the drain for axed northern prison

25 September 2024

During Estimates, the Liberal minority government admitted that they wasted $7.2 million on the now cancelled northern prison, including nearly $1 million on consultants alone.

Over the past 6 years, the Liberals have pursued three failed sites, millions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted and a huge amount of angst has been caused in the Meander Valley community.

The entire process has been a waste of taxpayer money, and it’s little wonder the state budget has ended up in its current state after ten years of Liberal mismanagement.

Minister Ogilvie is yet to outline how much the improved video call technology for prisoners will cost instead, but we now know that number starts at $7.2 million.

Tasmania can’t afford the Liberal minority government.

Jen Butler MP
Shadow Minister for Corrections & Rehabilitation
