A Fresh Start for first home buyers

16 June 2025

A Winter Labor government will expand choice for first home buyers and stimulate demand for builders by extending existing stamp duty concessions to newly built houses.

The current stamp duty exemption for first home buyers only applies to existing homes. It doesn’t make any sense.

After 11 years of the Liberals, young Tasmanians are shut out of the housing market, building approvals are at record lows, and government policies are making the problem worse.

It’s time for a Fresh Start for housing in Tasmania.

To fix the housing crisis and keep young people in the state, a Labor government I lead will do things differently.

Labor’s policy will create more demand for our builders, and more houses will mean lower prices for first homebuyers.

Labor wants to do everything we can to help young people stay in Tasmania, and helping them set down roots in a new home is one part of our Plan for a Fresh Start for Tasmania.
