Automotive workers latest casualty of Rockliff’s budget crisis

13 March 2025

Tasmanian Labor stands for safe, secure and well-paid jobs and we are highly disappointed by the Government’s treatment of TasTAFE Automotive employees who have been subjected to unsafe working conditions before being told half their team will be made redundant.

The AEU has called for immediate action to support the affected workers and we’re backing them in.

But with Jeremy Rockliff’s budget disaster spiralling out of control and Minister Felix Ellis doing everything he can to tear TAFE down, there are serious questions about the government’s ability to step in and do what’s right.

Jeremy Rockliff’s budget disaster is having wide-reaching effects on Tasmania, with a fire-sale of state-owned assets taking place and a hiring freeze on critical public sector workers.

Now it looks like the education of our young people has become the latest casualty, it begs the question of what will be on the chopping block next.

The Liberals have already sent TAFE down a dangerous path with their reforms, and the Premier needs to rule out further privatisation of TAFE immediately.

Shadow Minister for TAFE, Skills & Training
