Under Premier Rockliff’s weak minority government, building and construction activity, which should be a pillar of economic growth, has been left to flounder – just look at the latest ABS building activity data.
The value of building work done in Tasmania has declined in each of the last six quarters which coincides with when Premier Rockliff lost control of the Parliament and took his government into minority. The value of work done last quarter is almost 10 per cent lower than the quarter Premier Rockliff’s weak leadership took his government into minority.
It’s just more data proving that the Liberal minority government is bad for Tasmania’s economy and bad for jobs.
It’s been close to 10 years since the Liberals promised to make planning fairer, faster, cheaper, and simpler with a singular statewide scheme. Instead, nothing has happened, except the system becoming more complicated, inefficient, and out of touch with the needs of Tasmanians.
Rather than addressing the real issues with band-aid fixes like their failed DAPs legislation, it’s time to go straight to the heart of the matter. We need bold, comprehensive reform of Tasmania’s planning scheme and we need it now in 2025.
Tasmania is crying out for more housing supply, good development opportunities should be supported instead of stunted, and major projects must be green lit to boost the economy and provide thousands of safe, secure, well-paying jobs for Tasmanians.
The only thing this Liberal minority government is good at building is its track record of failing to deliver.
