Business confidence sinks in wake of Spirits fiasco

11 December 2024

Tasmanian business confidence has sunk to the lowest in the nation in the wake of the Rockliff minority government’s disastrous handling of the Spirits fiasco.

NAB’s November monthly business survey shows business confidence was lower in Tasmania than any other state or territory, while business conditions were the third worst in the nation.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey declared that it would be very difficult for business to trust the Rockliff government again after the Liberals butchered the Spirits replacement project.

“The economic costs will be felt by businesses and taxpayers for years to come. Our brand has been damaged and it has impacted on business confidence," Mr Bailey said.

These latest figures are yet more evidence that he was correct.

With more than 6,000 jobs lost since Premier Rockliff lost control of the parliament, record levels of debt and deficit and the biggest infrastructure stuff-up in Tasmania’s history, it is little wonder businesses are losing confidence in the Liberals to manage the economy.
