Cabinet division over wasteful spending

06 February 2025

The growing Liberal division has spilled into the media today, with two different Ministers offering conflicting commentary on the state’s finances.

On the same day that Treasurer Barnett tried to defend the Government’s wasteful spend on advertising, Felix Ellis called for advertising spending to be cut while discussing Tasmania’s bleak budget situation.

“We’ve been upfront that we think that there are opportunities to make the public service more efficient and more productive. That includes things like using better processes to remove spending, wasteful spending in terms of advertising, travel, and consultant fees,” Ellis said.

Treasurer Barnett has repeatedly demonstrated he is clueless about Tasmania’s finances, claiming we are on a “pathway to surplus” despite budget papers showing record deficit and debt and no pathway to a cash surplus, which will stop state debt spiralling out of control.

The Revised Estimates Report released next week will be very telling.

We know Eric Abetz is lurking in the shadows, is Felix Ellis auditioning to be his Treasurer?
