Child safety latest casualty of Abetz’ cuts

By Jess Greene MP Shadow Minister for Children & Young People

26 August 2026

Our Child Safety workforce is critical to protecting vulnerable children and supporting families when they need help most.

With the system already under enormous pressure, the Government should be doing everything possible to recruit and retain skilled and experienced workers.

Instead, after 13 years of Liberal waste and neglect, Minister Palmer and Eric Abetz are trying to cut the conditions of the very workers Tasmania relies on to protect children.

Slashing the Child Safety Allowance by around 40 per cent risks driving workers away and making an already difficult job even harder.

Minister Palmer must stand up to Eric Abetz, withdraw this proposal, resolve the bargaining delays and focus on building the stable workforce needed to keep Tasmanian children safe.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, Premier Rockliff has put Eric Abetz in charge of cutting jobs and services to pay for it, but it’s Tasmanians who’ll pay the ultimate price.
