Leader of the House Eric Abetz’ account of the last week of parliament misses some significant points.
Labor recognises the importance of a well-functioning parliament.
In fact, Labor’s opposition to a motion was the only reason the government’s draft Coastal Policy amendment bill wasn’t sabotaged by the Greens after the Liberals’ coalition partner the Jacqui Lambie Network sensationally broke their agreement which was supposed to ensure stability.
Labor also recognises the importance of holding the government to account for its failings, and won’t stop doing so.
The week in parliament saw the Liberals continue to block attempts to reveal details about their $300 million in cuts to public services at the same time as information came to light showing some health patients have been waiting more than 11 years for specialist appointments.
We also saw the Premier admit that the new Spirits vessels won’t be in operation this summer, despite tourism and hospitality venues being assured they will be, costing the economy close to $350 million dollars.
If the Liberals expect issues as serious as these to be brushed under the carpet, they’re living on another planet.
