Does Howlett back Liberals’ plan to end greyhound racing?

29 August 2024

Instead of waiting for the weekend’s Liberal Party state council, Racing Minister Jane Howlett today needs to provide confidence to the Tasmanian racing industry and stand up to Green-sympathising Liberals who want to end Tasmanian greyhound racing.

She must explain to the public, racing participants and her own party that:

  • Greyhound racing supports hundreds of jobs, small businesses, and regional communities.
  • The Parliament has just passed the landmark integrity and animal welfare legislation which provides confidence to the community.
  • A ban will be devastating for participants and their families.

This should all be done today.

Minister Howlett and the Premier have been completely silent on the recent announcement that a North-West Coast racing track will not go ahead, another broken Liberal promise.

After breaking their promise to save greyhound and harness racing on the North-West Coast, Jane Howlett and the Liberals need to be supporting racing participants, not undermining them at every turn.
