Early childhood education and care must be part of education review

11 July 2024

Labor is calling for early childhood education and care to be part of the review into Tasmania’s education system.

Right across the state, childcare centres are stretched to capacity, with years-long waitlists also keeping Tasmanian parents out of work and hurting the economy.

While Labor went into the last election with a strong childcare agenda, the Liberals have no plan and appear to fundamentally misunderstand the critical nature of the problem.  It’s hurting productivity and adding huge stress to families.

The upcoming education review presents an opportunity to address some of the challenges facing the sector so we can get better outcomes for children, families and the ECEC workforce.  We think there’s scope to increase the provision of childcare using existing school infrastructure.

Labor stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs. Better access to childcare is critical to enabling parents and guardians to work, as well as ensuring young people get the best start in life.

Labor is a strong supporter of early childhood education and care, and we’ll continue to push for improvements for the sector, and for improvements for families and children who access care.
