How much more will Tasmanians pay for broken TasInsure promise?

By Luke Edmunds MLC Shadow Minister for Finance

25 August 2026

Premier Rockliff promised TasInsure wouldn’t cost Tasmanians a cent.

He promised it would slash household insurance bills by $250 a year. He even claimed it would help bring down grocery prices.

Not one of those promises has been delivered.

Instead, the Liberals have wasted $150,000 on a consultant they dubbed the “Michael Jordan of insurance” and forced Tasmanians to pay another $4.2 million for a TasInsure bureaucracy after His Airness said their policy couldn’t be delivered.

Now, the Government’s agreement with RACT reveals taxpayers face even more costs.

The MOU proposes that the Government pay RACT an agreed monthly retainer for five years. It also contemplates reimbursing RACT for costs incurred during the interim partnership.

The Premier has not told Tasmanians how much the monthly retainer will be or how much RACT could be reimbursed.

Instead of getting lower insurance bills and cheaper groceries, Tasmanians could end up paying an insurance company for the next five years.

  • How much will the Government pay an insurance company to deliver insurance?
  • When will Tasmanians finally see the $250 saving Premier Rockliff promised them reflected in their insurance bills?

After 13 years, the Liberals are cutting jobs and services to pay for their waste. TasInsure is becoming another costly Liberal promise that has delivered nothing for Tasmanian households.
