Is Peter Dutton going to campaign against Bass Strait offshore wind?

08 December 2024

As the federal Coalition ramps up its attacks on renewable energy, Tasmanian Liberals must make their position clear.

The Coalition says it wants debates with federal Labor on energy in locations where offshore wind zones have been proposed – that must include Tasmania. No doubt they hope to create division in communities that could directly benefit from these projects.

Peter Dutton’s Coalition will do everything it can to scuttle this emerging industry that has enormous potential to provide cheap energy and well-paid jobs in regional areas.

Renewable energy projects are crucial for Tasmania to boost its generation capacity and remain attractive for existing and new industries.

Jeremy Rockliff’s minority Liberal Government and Energy Minister Nick Duigan have paid lip service to offshore wind but proposals have stalled and investors are frustrated.

For instance, the Government has not committed to the urgent port upgrades required at Bell Bay for offshore wind projects.

As the federal Coalition pushes its anti-wind rhetoric, where exactly do the Tasmanian Liberals stand?

Janie Finlay MP
Shadow Minister for Energy and Renewables
