Liberals’ Marinus confusion continues

16 May 2025

After 11 years and over $100 million spent on the project, the Liberals have today admitted they still don’t know if they support Marinus or not.

Minister Duigan says the project “is a once in a generation opportunity for Tasmania, one that promises to deliver long term benefits through job creation, renewable energy investment and economic growth, particularly in regional communities”.

Then in the same breath, he goes on to say that “this project must stack up for Tasmania before it proceeds.”

The Liberals have now been talking about Marinus for 11 years. Why has it taken them so long to reach this point? By now, they’ve either done the work, or they haven’t.

The Minister needs to come clean about what he’s planning to do if the project doesn’t “stack up”, and what that will mean for the $25 billion pipeline of renewable energy investment hinging on this project.

Shadow Minister for Energy & Renewables
