Local content plan key to stadium’s jobs and skills benefit

07 May 2024

Tasmanian Labor stands for safe, secure well-paid jobs.

That’s why we’re backing in a new stadium – so we can secure thousands of jobs in construction while simultaneously training up the workforce to build future projects for Tasmania.

But for these jobs and skills to benefit Tasmania most, we need a local content plan for the stadium to make sure it’s built by as many Tasmanians as possible.

The last thing Tasmania needs is a repeat of the Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment with countless contractors coming from outside the state and leaving just as quickly.

Good Tasmanian jobs can be generated through a robust procurement process that maximises opportunities for Tassie businesses who have a track record of offering safe, secure and well-paid jobs.

I’ve said we’ll continue to hold Jeremy Rockliff to account for delivering this stadium and a local content plan is key part of that.

Tasmania’s economy has slowed and 5,000 jobs have been lost since Jeremy Rockliff lost majority government. Building companies are going bust. There are no major infrastructure projects scheduled to come online once the Bridgewater Bridge is finished.

That needs to change, and that’s why Labor has changed.

Under my leadership, the Labor Party stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs and we’re willing to work with everyone to make sure these jobs can benefit Tasmania and Tasmanians the most.
