Local jobs plan key to ensuring stadium benefits Tasmanians

08 July 2024

Tasmanian Labor stands for safe, secure, and well-paid jobs, which is why we are supporting a stadium.

We welcome the incorporation of Tasmanian timber into the concept design for the stadium, but now we need a commitment that Tasmanian workers are also going to be incorporated into the project.

That’s why we are calling on the Government to commit to implement a proper local content plan for the stadium, because Tasmanians need to benefit the most from the construction phase.

This project represents a chance to secure thousands of construction jobs for Tasmanian workers, while simultaneously training our workforce to build future projects for the state. I want to see every Tasmanian worker currently on the Bridgewater Bridge or at UTAS’ forestry building development given the opportunity to get to work on the new project.

Under my leadership, the Labor Party stands for safe, secure, well-paid jobs. Good Tasmanian jobs can be generated through a robust procurement process that maximises opportunities for Tassie businesses and workers.

The last thing we need is a repeat of the Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment with countless contractors coming from outside the state and leaving just as quickly.

I’ve said we’ll continue to hold Jeremy Rockliff to account for delivering this stadium on time and on budget. If the Government develops a local content plan, it will be good news for Tasmania’s economy and local jobs
