Net debt is up by almost $1.5 billion

By Dean Winter MP Shadow Treasurer

12 August 2026

Tasmania’s net debt grew by almost $1.5 billion last financial year according to the Preliminary Outcomes Report.

The Treasurer’s media statement claiming the report shows Tasmania's net debt is down should be withdrawn as it is untrue.  It is potentially in breach of the Ministerial Code of Conduct.

Eric Abetz is only claiming debt is down because net debt exploded by less than was expected.

That is not paying down debt.

Only Eric Abetz and the Liberals could be slashing services while at the same time overseeing the destruction of Tasmania’s budget position.
