New GP clinic can’t hide $700 million in health cuts

By Sarah Lovell MLC Shadow Minister for Health, Mental Health & Wellbeing

06 September 2026

I welcome today’s announcement that Risdon Vale will finally get a new bulk-billed GP clinic.

Labor announced a free doctor clinic for Risdon Vale more than a year ago, after the Liberals allowed the community’s only GP service to close.

Days later, the Liberals claimed they were adopting Labor’s TassieDoc policy, before paying private providers instead.

But one re-announced Labor policy cannot distract from the fact that Premier Rockliff and Eric Abetz are cutting $700 million from health to pay for 13 years of Liberal waste.

Tasmanians deserve better access to GPs, but they also deserve properly funded hospitals, mental health services, and specialist care when they need it.

While Bridget Archer stands beside the Premier announcing this clinic, she is also standing by while specialist Mother Baby Unit services are cut at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

I’m pleased Risdon Vale will finally get the clinic Labor promised. Now the Liberals need to stop cutting the rest of the health system.
