The latest ABS population data confirms what Tasmanians already know – under Jeremy Rockliff’s tired, minority government, record numbers of Tasmanians are moving interstate for better opportunities.

 

The state lost another 765 Tasmanians to the mainland last quarter, more than twice as many Tasmanians leaving compared to the previous three months. It also marked the 11th consecutive quarter of negative net interstate migration, which is now the longest run of net losses to the mainland in more than 20 years.

 

Tasmania’s population growth is the lowest in the nation – just 0.3 per cent, compared to a national average of 1.7 per cent. We’ve now lost 8,500 Tasmanians to the mainland since Jeremy Rockliff became Premier. That’s 8,500 young, working-aged people – potential homeowners, skilled workers, and future parents – who’ve chosen to build their lives somewhere else.

 

This is not just a population statistic – it’s a clear vote of no confidence in the direction of Tasmania under Jeremy Rockliff’s government.

 

Tasmania needs change.

 

A Winter Labor Government will deliver a Fresh Start for Tasmania, and we’ve already outlined policies aimed at addressing Jeremy Rockliff’s population crisis.

 

Labor will create more homes through RenewTas – our new not-for-profit Government Business Enterprise dedicated to unlocking development, activating public land, and getting homes built again.

 

We’ve announced that stamp duty concessions will be extended to newly built homes to help first home buyers get a foot in the door, and last year we launched our bold Night-Time Economy Strategy to revitalise Tasmania’s nightlife, help businesses thrive, and encourage young people to stay in the state.

 

After 11 years of the Liberals, it’s time for a Fresh Start under Labor.
