Premier needs to correct the record after blatant Bridgewater Bridge lie

03 December 2024

Premier Rockliff needs to immediately correct the record after shamelessly trying to rewrite history and claim the Bridgewater Bridge is somehow on time and on budget.

It’s neither.

Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent confirmed the project was $200 million over budget when responding to a question in the Legislative Council, saying the budget for the project had changed ‘about two years ago’ to $786 million.

The Public Works Committee listed the project cost at $576 million in 2021.

Former Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson also said cars would be driving over the bridge by the end of 2024. They aren’t.

TCCI CEO Michael Bailey said it will be difficult to ever trust Premier Rockliff’s government again, and with blatant dishonesty like this from the Premier it’s easy to see why.

The Ministerial code of conduct states that “Ministers must not deliberately make statements that mislead Parliament or the public and in line with Parliamentary practice are obliged to correct the record in a manner that is appropriate to the circumstances, as soon as possible after any incorrect statement is made.”

It’s clear the Premier was being deceptive in an attempt to distract from the disastrous Spirits Fiasco.

He needs to come clean with Tasmanians and correct the record immediately.
