RIP Antarctic and Science Precinct

30 May 2024

Today’s Antarctic Division announcement is confirmation of yet another project not being delivered at Macquarie Point, and signals the end for the Antarctic and Science Precinct announced in the Hobart City Deal.

The Antarctic and Science precinct promised to open up a host of exciting educational and economic opportunities, but like so many announcements from the Liberals, will never see the light of day.

The precinct offered the opportunity to incorporate not just the Antarctic Division, but the CSIRO and IMAS too – allowing Hobart to continue to build on its amazing reputation as the Antarctic gateway.

As well as being another massive lost opportunity for Tasmania’s economy, the precinct’s abandonment casts further doubt of the Liberals ability to manage the delivery of any project at Macquarie Point.

It is yet more evidence of a government that is big on talk, but bad on delivery.
