Rockliff fails to rule out selling TasPorts to foreign owners

13 March 2025

Jeremy Rockliff has failed to rule out selling TasPorts to foreign owners.

If this takes place, it will be a disaster for Tasmania, just as it has been in other states.

In New South Wales, the Liberals secretly included clauses in the port sale contract which effectively prevented any competition to Port Botany for nearly 100 years.

This seriously damaged Newcastle’s economy, put up prices for everyday items across New South Wales, and hurt exporters.

In the Northern Territory, the port was placed in foreign ownership – something roundly criticised by both sides of politics and even the former US President as a major national security mistake.

The critical role TasPorts plays in the development of Tasmania’s economy and in maintaining our security is undeniable.

The fact the Premier can’t rule out its sale to foreign owners is yet another indication of just how bad his budget disaster is.

Shadow Minister for Infrastructure
