Rockliff’s gun reform delay risks more Liberal waste
Labor is calling on Premier Rockliff to step up and provide clarity on when he will bring gun reform legislation to Parliament.
After the Bondi massacre, Premier Rockliff agreed with National Cabinet that strong action was needed on gun reform, including caps on the number of firearms any one individual can hold.
Last night, Treasurer Jim Chalmers reiterated the Albanese Government is fast-tracking tougher gun laws through National Cabinet.
But now that it’s time to act, Premier Rockliff has backed away.
The Liberal Government still hasn’t introduced legislation - the July 1 deadline is fast approaching - and further delay risks Tasmania missing out on Commonwealth funding for the buyback scheme.
After 13 years of Liberal waste, Tasmanians cannot afford another stuff-up that leaves taxpayers worse off.
The Liberals want unlimited guns in the community. Labor does not support that, and Tasmanians do not support that either.
We will work constructively with the Parliament to deliver practical reforms that improve community safety while respecting the legitimate needs of primary producers, sports shooters, and recreational hunters.
The first job of any government is to keep the community safe. If Premier Rockliff is serious about that, he should bring the legislation to Parliament.
