After 11 years of the Liberals talking about building Project Marinus — and spending more than $130 million on consultants and studies — Tasmanians are now scratching their heads about whether Jeremy Rockliff actually supports it.
On Saturday, Jeremy Rockliff suggested it might not stack up and his government might not agree to proceed with a financial investment decision.
Then yesterday, after attacking Labor for wanting to make the mainland pay for Tasmania’s share of the project, he said he would also sell Tasmania's share and use the funds to help pay for his 2021 promise to upgrade the Launceston General Hospital.
How will that work if the project isn't going ahead?
After 11 years, how does Jeremy Rockliff still not know whether the project is going ahead? And why is the Project Marinus Whole-of-State business case still being kept hidden, when it was received by the Liberals weeks ago? What does it say?
Labor supports the project based on all the evidence we have seen. There is $25 billion worth of renewable energy investment waiting at the door, some of it directly reliant on Marinus proceeding.
After 11 years of delays, it's time to get on with it.
