Spirits on shaky ground as Premier admits to joint bailout of international company

15 May 2024

Premier Jeremy Rockliff has admitted that his government teamed up with the Finnish Government to bail out beleaguered Finnish shipbuilding company RMC.

The Premier needs to explain why bailing out an international company is the responsibility of Tasmanian taxpayers.

RMC was bailed out by the Finnish Government in 2022. Shouldn’t it be a job for the Finnish Government again?

To make matters worse, with RMC clearly teetering on the edge of insolvency, the Premier was unable to outline what protections are in place for TT-Line and Tasmanian taxpayers if the Finnish shipbuilder does go under.

If RMC needed a $160 million bailout, or, as the Premier put it, TT line would have go back to the market to start it all over again – how can Tasmanians be sure the new Spirits aren’t at risk?
