Tasmania needs industrial manslaughter laws

28 April 2024

Labor stands for jobs.  Well paid, safe and secure jobs.

International Workers’ Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have lost their lives at work and a day to fight to do better to protect the health and safety of current workers.

In Tasmania, it is also a timely opportunity to again call on the Liberal Government to introduce industrial manslaughter laws in the state.

Tasmania is the last jurisdiction in the nation to introduce these critical laws, which would greatly increase deterrence for employers not doing enough to provide safe workplaces.

Every worker deserves to come home safely, but we know this isn’t always the case.

I implore the government to do the right thing.  It’s time that Tasmania came into line with the rest of the nation and backed in these laws.

Dean Winter MP
Labor Leader
Shadow Minister for Jobs, Workplace Relations and Safety
