Tasmania’s economy stalling as budget disaster approaches

05 June 2024

Fresh figures released by the ABS have provided more evidence that Tasmania’s economy is stalling as the state heads towards a looming budget disaster.

Tasmania’s State Final Demand rose just 0.1 per cent in the March quarter.

Significantly, last quarter’s SFD figure has been revised down to -0.3 per cent, and private investment has now fallen in seven of the last 10 quarters.

Since Jeremy Rockliff’s leadership sent his government into minority, Tasmania has already shed 5,000 jobs, businesses are going bust at an alarming rate and record numbers of Tasmanians are leaving for the mainland.

The Premier’s language about the upcoming budget should provide reason for concern for Tasmanian businesses and households searching for hope.

But with a looming budget disaster and a Premier refusing to rule out public sector job cuts, Tasmania’s economic situation only looks to be getting worse.

Shadow Treasurer
