Liberty Bell Bay is gone, and more than 200 jobs have already been lost.
Now more than 550 workers at Bell Bay Aluminium are waiting to find out whether the Liberals will secure the conditions needed for their employer to stay.
Frighteningly for them, the Government doesn’t appear to have coherent energy policy to get the best outcome for Tasmania.
Minister for Energy Nick Duigan was happy to throw out a $60 million figure when it came to the gap in negotiations, but he wasn’t so forthcoming in providing any context about that figure, or how much Hydro had raised the price from the current contract.
He couldn’t detail what lessons his Government had learned from the Liberty failure either.
Premier Rockliff failed to explain his energy policy, and why he isn’t using affordable, reliable power to build Tasmania instead of simply selling it to whoever will pay the highest price.
The Federal Government has a role to play, but Tasmania has to act first. That means securing a power deal with Bell Bay Aluminium and taking a clear ask to Canberra.
Today’s announcement from Prime Minister Albanese and Premier Minns shows what can be achieved when governments work together to protect jobs and industry. Premier Minns got it done. Premier Rockliff needs to do the same.
Tasmania has publicly owned renewable energy that should give us an enormous advantage in manufacturing and industry, but after 13 years of Liberal waste that advantage is evaporating.
