The Federal Government is wrong to lock Tasmania into a GST deal that is systematically unfair and funnels billions of dollars towards the wealthiest state in the country.
It was a putrid deal cooked up by Scott Morrison to buy votes in Western Australia at Tasmania’s expense, and it should never have been agreed to in the first place.
Why should a child in Western Australia get access to a better education or better hospital care simply because Scott Morrison designed a special GST deal for one state?
Tasmanians deserve the same quality schools, hospitals, and essential services as every other Australian.
Eric Abetz can complain today, but the fact is the Tasmanian Liberals sold Tasmania out when they backed Scott Morrison’s deal in the first place.
They told Tasmanians the changes would leave us better off and attacked Labor for opposing them.
Now, only after the Productivity Commission has vindicated Labor’s position and the Federal Government has chosen to keep Scott Morrison’s rotten deal in place, the Liberals are pretending they had nothing to do with it.
Tasmanian Labor is the only party that has been right on this from day one.
