Tasmanian Labor will step up and introduce industrial manslaughter legislation to the Tasmanian parliament to protect the health and safety of workers and fill a void left by the Liberal government who have repeatedly kicked the can down the road on this vital issue.
Labor stands for well-paid, safe and secure jobs, and these can’t exist if workers aren’t protected on the job.
We will work closely with the union movement to ensure the legislation does what is intended and helps keep workers safe.
The Liberals have resisted introducing industrial manslaughter legislation for far too long, and we have lost faith that Minister Madeleine Ogilvie will do the right thing to protect workers.
Every worker deserves to come home safely, but we know this isn’t always the case.
There is no justification for not backing these laws to encourage all employers to provide safe workplaces and hold to account those who do not.
It’s beyond time Tasmania came into line with the rest of the nation and introduced these laws.
With the Liberals dragging their heels on this vital matter, Labor will pick up the slack and introduce a bill of our own to finally get some action on this important issue.
