Treasurer’s head buried in the sand while business confidence remains worst in the nation

07 February 2025

Yet another report has confirmed that Tasmania’s business confidence is the worst in the nation, yet if you listened to Treasurer Guy Barnett you’d believe everything was fine.

The NAB Quarterly Business Survey shows Tasmanian business confidence has slipped from best in the nation to worst in just the past 12 months, in a timeline which mirrors Premier Rockliff losing control of the parliament and completely bungling the Spirits replacement project.

Despite this, the Treasurer has his head completely buried in the sand, failing to even acknowledge the dire confidence levels while trying to spruik an improvement in conditions.

The business conditions the Treasurer points to are testament to businesses pushing through in spite of this government, not because of it.

The TCCI said it would be difficult for business to ever trust this Liberal government again after the Premier’s disastrous handling of the Spirits fiasco.

His Treasurer’s continued refusal to even acknowledge the obvious economic and financial challenges facing Tasmania proves exactly why.

Josh Willie MP
Shadow Treasurer
