Labor is committed to making Tasmania the best place in Australia to live, and seeing our economy thrive.
That’s why we’re championing an events-specific ferries strategy to unlock the Derwent River network and make it easier for people to get to and from big events in Hobart.
Hurricanes Big Bash League matches, like the final to be played at Bellerive tomorrow night, are a great example of how the River Derwent ferries can support big events.
But unfortunately, the Big Bash is the exception rather than the rule. How good would it be if locals could rely on the ferries to get to festivals like Dark Mofo, the Taste or a big concert?
While we’re interested in better utilising the current service, with the network set to expand, we see an even bigger opportunity to properly integrate the ferries with events once new routes come online – but it needs a dedicated plan.
Labor has already announced a raft of initiatives to unlock the potential of Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality sector through our Night Time Economy Strategy.
Optimising the ferry network to better cater for events will complement this perfectly, and will be good for patrons, good for the economy and jobs, and good for traffic congestion.
