Will they let Abetz out today?

By Ella Haddad MP - Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Assembly

15 October 2026

Will they let Abetz out today?

After more than a month in hiding, Eric Abetz might finally be let out today.

As Minister for Macquarie Point, the Treasurer should be the one announcing the stadium builder. If he’s allowed out, it will be the first chance Tasmanians have had in weeks to put questions to him, and there’s a long list waiting.

He should explain why he’s cutting $1.5 billion from the services Tasmanians rely on, including educational support for students with a disability and promised funding for a cancer hospital in the North-West.

He should tell Tasmanians where he stands on banning conversion practices, and whether that’s why the Liberals have kept him quiet while the rest of the hard right speaks out.

And he should say whether he’s made his peace with the Premier hand-picking Bridget Archer as his successor.

If the Treasurer turns up for a stadium photo op but won’t answer for any of it, Tasmanians will know exactly why he’s been kept hidden.
