Why we need it
Labor is committed to improving outcomes for Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
A Dean Winter Labor Government is committed to closing the gap by supporting Tasmanian Aboriginal people, and educating Government agencies, so they are better able to work together for the benefit of Aboriginal people and to significantly improve educational, health, justice and community support outcomes.
Labor is committed to the full participation of Aboriginal people in these decisions.
The details
A Dean Winter Labor Government will continue to support the ongoing Truth-telling and Healing process as a necessary first step to a Treaty with Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
Labor will fund the establishment of independent Truth-telling and Healing Commissioners. Labor is committed to working with Tasmanian Aboriginal people on the appointment of these Commissioners, through a process that is Aboriginal led.
Labor supports the Palawa Business Hub as the first Tasmanian one stop shop to showcase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander producers, businesses and consultants living in Lutruwita, and to connect government, industry and organisations with Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
Labor will provide $150,000 per year for four years to TRACA so it can continue to engage and advise the state government on affairs affecting Aboriginal Tasmanians.
Labor supports the provision of an additional $150,000 for the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania, as part of its $4.4 million commitment to Closing the Gap and other Aboriginal projects.
Labor will continue to identify and achieve land handbacks of crown land that are identified as significant to Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
