A fresh plan for Small Business

A Dean Winter Labor Government supports safe, secure and well-paid jobs.

Labor’s Fresh Start for Small Business will:

  • Cap power price rises for small businesses
  • Establish a single portal to centralise regulatory requirements
  • Support the removal of red tape and help keep costs down for small business

Why we need it

After 11 years of the Liberals, the cost of doing business is higher than ever and small businesses are weighed down in Liberal broken promises and red tape.

  • Tourism businesses have been hurt by the Liberals’ failure to deliver the new Spirits.
  • Business is in limbo with the Liberals’ privatisation plans.
  • Young people are leaving the state in search of jobs and opportunity, making it harder for businesses to hire and keep workers.

The details

A Dean Winter Labor Government will support small, locally owned Tasmanian businesses to succeed. Labor will:

  • Commit to no new or increased taxes. Labor will work with small businesses in government, as part of our Budget Repair Roundtable.
  • Establish a single portal to centralise small business regulatory requirements.
  • Support funding the current New Business Support Pilot Program, providing up to two hours of free, independent business advice for start-ups and early-stage businesses, and evaluate it in Government.
  • Support the removal of unnecessary red tape, including the introduction of a simplified, low-cost liquor licence for small businesses.
  • Advocate to the Commonwealth Government to resolve postcode classifications to enable second- and third-year Working Holiday Maker visa holders to continue working in Tasmanian regional communities.
  • Cap power price rises to a maximum of 2.5 per cent for small businesses for the next three years, providing greater certainty for small businesses about their operating costs and enabling better cash flow management.
  • Recognise agritourism as a permitted use on agricultural land by:
    • Establishing a clear, state-wide definition of agritourism within the Tasmanian Planning Scheme;
    • Implementing a streamlined and fit-for-purpose regulatory framework;
    • Releasing the 2022 Agritourism Regulatory Mapping and Reform Project report and acting on its recommendations; and
    • Create a dedicated support network to help operators navigate planning and compliance requirements.

“Labor will work with small businesses to deliver a Fresh Start.”
